You’ve booked your big adventure and now you’re standing over your suitcase wondering what you should actually take with you? No problem, you’re not alone! We’ll help you put together the perfect outfit for your tour.
What to Pack for a Dog Sledding Tour
In Arctic winter conditions, your outfit should consist of three layers: the outer layer, the mid-layer, and the base layer. If it is very cold, you can also add more mid layers.
Protection with an Outer Layer
The outer layer, also known as the shell, shields you from wind, rain, and snow. A waterproof or water-resistant shell prevents moisture from reaching the inner layers, keeping you warmer. Don’t worry about buying everything new, as we provide essential items for the tour, including a winter overall, winter boots, thick mittens, and work gloves. Just remember to bring a warm hat and a scarf or fleece buff.
Insulation with a Mid-Layer
The mid-layer, such as fleece or down, traps body heat to keep you warm, especially during breaks or low-activity periods when your body isn’t generating as much warmth. A fleece jacket and pants or a thick wool sweater work well for this layer. It’s best to bring several choices.
Moisture Management with a Base Layer
The base layer, typically made from wool or synthetic materials, is designed to wick sweat away from your skin. Staying dry is crucial because wet clothing can cool your body quickly and increase the risk of hypothermia. Here, long underwear comes into play. Since this layer fits snugly against your body, it’s important to choose the right materials, cotton is a absolut no go!
Why is Layering so important?
Layering is essential in winter for staying warm, dry, and comfortable, particularly when outdoor conditions shift. It helps regulate your body temperature by keeping sweat off your skin, insulating your body heat, and blocking wind, rain, or snow. A flexible layering system allows you to add or remove clothing based on your activity level and the weather, preventing overheating or dampness. This approach ensures protection against cold-related risks like hypothermia while keeping you comfortable in various winter environments.
What Material Should My Clothes Be?
The best materials are those made from wool, with Merino wool being a trusted choice over the years. Avoid cotton clothing, as it absorbs moisture when you sweat and can lead to chilling. Unsure about the fabric of your clothes? Check the care label on the inside of your garments.
What do we provide you with?
We’ll give you a warm winter overall, winter boots, thick mittens and work gloves. And of course a winter sleeping bag incl. liner and a waterproof duffel bag to store your things in.
